Living on an island means that the sea is as much a part of life as the land. Even when it's out of sight its presence is inescapable. It lends the wind its fragrance, the air its luminescence, the light its clarity. But to me the essence of the sea is waves. Nothing else makes waves, and be they languid or fierce, ripples or foaming peaks, they give the sea its form and its rhythm.
